Okuribito (Departures), Japan, 2008.
A story of a cello player, Daigo. Daigo’s Tokyo orchestra gets broke. He finds himself unemployed and with debt. Daigo comes back to his small hometown with his wife, after selling his professional cello. By coincidence, he starts working in a funeral agency, taking care of the bodies before they are placed into coffins. The new experience and job grows on him. He achieves a peaceful balance in this new activity.
The story of his father and mother is stitched into the main plot. A rather heavy loaded story, dealing with death, parenthood, leaving young children, humility and humanity. Simple, yet remarkably deep in the explorations of one’s dreams of success and desires.
